Morning Walk
Mom and I went on a walk one morning to check out the beach and the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse (different from the Yaquina Head Lighthouse). My house is across the street from the beach so you can be on the beach in 2 minutes (Yes I am going to get spoiled!). Then if you head south you enter into the Yaquina Bay State Recreational Area and the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. You can also see the Yaquina Bay Bridge that connects the north and south parts of town (on Highway 101). All of that is just .5 miles away...crazy!

Cobble Beach Video
I wanted to post this video so you all could hear the sounds of the cobble stones. It is hard to hear because it is so windy but if you listen close it sounds like applause when the stones move after being hit by the waves.
Yaquina Head Lighthouse
The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is a working lighthouse in Newport, OR. It is also the tallest lighthouse on the Oregon coast. In the winter it's a popular spot for whale watching (my goal is to see some whales at some point while I'm here). Also after a little hike down to the ocean you can get to Cobble Beach. The cobblestone beach is covered with driftwood and at low tide there are usually seals on the rocks. Mom and I went to the lighthouse the first full day we were in Newport. We did not catch low tide so I will have to go back and try to see some seals!

Waterfalls!
Right before you get to Portland from the east there are a few waterfalls right off the interstate. The first one we stopped at was Horsetail Falls.
Multnomah Falls is the most famous and tallest waterfall in Oregon. You can see the falls from the interstate about 30 miles East of Portland. They even have a lodge and restaurant next to it. Gorgeous!
Oregon Trail
For any of you that know me fairly well know that I have always been interested in the Oregon Trail. When I was growing up I LOVED the computer game and then while I was at OU I took a few classes about the West and wrote a few papers on the subject.
I was excited to see part of the trail outside of Baker City, OR.
Please excuse my 50 shades of grey attire. Clearly being in the car for 4 days affected my clothing choices. |
